NEW BC DISTANT LOCATION REGIONAL TAX CREDIT ZONE:
The Distant location regional tax credit (an additional 6%) is eligible for productions that can be shot within the interior (beyond Hope and Whistler and excluding the Capital Regional District (Victoria area)), thus bringing regional tax credits to 18.5% for BC productions, and 12% for foreign (see info below). Those shooting within the traditional regional zone (outside lower mainland but within Hope, Whistler and Victoria boundaries) can still qualify for the basic regional 6% credit.
NEW BC TAX CREDITS ON FOREIGN PRODUCTIONS:
Basic Provincial tax credit:
25% (up from 18% pre-2008)
Regional (6%) + New Distant Regional (6%) = 12% (up from 6% pre 2008)
There has been a 40% increase in combined provincial & regional tax credits available for foreign productions coming to BC. The Provincial credit is up to from 18% to 25% in 2007, while the existing BC regional tax credits (6%) have expanded with the introduction of a new Distant Location Regional Tax Credit (6%) - therefore doubling the amount producers can get for shooting in the interior of BC (12% total regional). (See below for description of the new Distant Location Regional Tax Credit zone)
NEW BC TAX CREDITS ON CANADIAN PRODUCTIONS:
Basic Provincial tax credit: 35% (up from 30% pre-2008)
Regional (12.5%) + New Distant Regional (6%) = 18.5 % (up from 12.5% pre 2008)
For local BC controlled productions that are willing to shoot in the Distant Location Regional zone, their new regional tax credits (Regional + New Distant Location Regional) alone is worth 18.5% (whereas in 2007 it was only 12.5%). (See below for description of the new Distant Location Regional Tax Credit zone). The basic BC Provincial credit is now up to 35% (from 30% in 2007) for local productions.
By combining the above with the existing Federal tax credits, foreign and local producers are now in a position to benefit more than ever before by shooting in British Columbia.
